A GoFundMe page said JJ Machnik suffered a "traumatic cardiac event" on the morning of Friday, May 10. The GoFundMe page had raised more than $39,000 from at least 680 donations as of Monday, May 13.

Machnik was rushed to Morristown Medical Center and "coded" on his way to the hospital. He was placed in a medically induced coma to be monitored for 48 hours in the cardiac care unit.

In an update on Sunday, May 12, the fundraiser's creator Marlana Hodgins said Machnik was starting to awaken.

"He's moved his legs and lifted his arms and has tried to sit up once," Hodgins wrote. "He's since been restrained and sedatives have been reintroduced to keep him calm and bring him along slowly. The next goal will be to work on slowly getting him off of the breathing tube."

Machnik is a wrestler at Howell High School and a captain for the Rebels.

"What I’m asking is for everyone else, all my friends and fellow coaches, to join us as we pray for a miracle of healing and restoration for JJ, for strength for his family, and remarkable insight and wisdom for the nurses and doctors that are caring for him," head coach John Gagliano posted on Facebook.
